One way is -- are you prepared in the event that your identity is stolen? There are three credit reporting agencies that can help you safeguard yourself against Identity theft. Here are a few suggestions from me.
Minimize the amount of credit cards you carry. Carry only necessary credit cards with you in your wallet.
Never disclose your personal information over the phone, Internet or by mail unless you know who you are talking with and they are a trustworthy source.
Shred all old documents that are over 5 years old. If you have a lot of shredding there are shredding companies that will come to your home or office to pick up and shred the documents. Surprisingly it is usually a very economical way to destroy your old records.
It is easy for thieves to target mailboxes and pull bank numbers from checks, sensitive information from bills and a variety of other information that is left in your outgoing mailbox slot. Instead, deposit your outgoing mail directly into post office boxes.
Check your homeowners insurance policy to see if you have coverage. By contacting your insurance company you would be surprised at how low it is to add an endorsement for identity theft coverage to your policy.
